Help settle a debate 200

Well, the overdrive on my old blue wagon (M46) is temporarily non-functional again. The girlfriend is afraid to drive the car much faster than about 60 mph because of engine noise and "high" RPMs. Me, I had her (the car, not the girlfriend) cruising along at 75 mph this afternoon at an indicated 3,500 rpm in 4th gear. The B230F is noisy at that speed, which I attribute mostly to exhaust resonances, but I figure that 3,500 rpm is not stressing the motor and is nothing to worry about.

She is convinced that the engine is going to "blow." I tried to reason with her that overdrive drops engine speed by only ~500 rpm, and a difference of 500 rpm is very negligible. Further the redline is either 6,000 or 6,500.
