Speedometer offset - 15 MPH 200 1980

For a few years, the speedometer in my 1980 245DL would jump up to 85 MPH when I was cruising at 70 in really cold weather (below 15 F), but it would always go back to normal when I stopped the car. Now this year it jumped to 85 and is stuck at 15 MPH above the actual speed - when the car is stopped, the speedometer reads 15 MPH. The odometer is not affected (I checked with mile marker signs on the highway). I was going to try pulling the cable out from the back of the gauge and then plugging it back in - is there a fix for this condition? Only 1300 miles to go to hit 300k miles and I don't want to screw up the odometer!
