bosch electronic ignition in 142 problem 140-160

I've just put the electronic ignition from a 75 240 in my 142. It decides to crank when i turn the ignition to the first postion. In the instructions that I downloaded from a V Performance link it says to just flip the ballast resistor around. I've tried every possible combination of wiring on this and it either cranks right away, or just clicks (no power getting to the starter). I figure there must still be something wrong with the wiring but the only thing i can think it might be is at the positive side of the coil (there was no mention of a brown wire in the same loom as the white wire which connects to the -ve terminal of the coil). I don't have a tach in my car so maybe that is a source of error.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
