Should I Buy This? 200 1988

I'm in California. A 21 year-old man who claims to know little about cars is selling is 1988 244 DL non-turbo with a frozen odometer (54k miles) and "frozen transmission" for $1k. He is unaware of any other major problems. I told him that was too much. He's going to think about it. The "frozen transmission" means that he cannot put the car in any gear except reverse and that's only briefly. His dad is a mechanic who said that the clutch needs to be replaced. I'm unsure if I should buy this car at any price, because I don't know or believe him that it's just a bad clutch; I suspect the transmission is bad. Any tips?
