Just for the record, Volvo NEVER made a center front arm rest for the 240. That being said, Volvo dealers did "offer" a center front arm rest from the aftermarket with matching fabric colors/style. The kit came with the arm rest, both side brackets, and enough bolts to mount it. The first one I bought was for our 89, from the dealer, it was a wonderful addition.
The second car I put one in was a 90 244, I used the core of the arm rest, brackets, and bolts from the 89 after the car was destroyed. I removed the blue vinyl and cloth cover along with all of it's stitches and used it's pieces as templates and used them as guides to cut new black vinyl and charcoal gray cloth to make a new cover. The new materials came from Joanne Fabrics. I stitched the new pieces, including the old zipper back together using an 1898 Singer sewing machine, when done it slipped over the core of the arm rest and looked like factory. I hope that revelation doesn't "diminish" my "manly" appearance on the BB!
The third one I installed, on a 92 245, came from Ebay, $20 if I recall correctly. It was rough but had the brackets and most of the bolts. I pulled the cover off and used the same process outlined above to make a new cover for it. On this one though, the foam on the core was seriously worn and had perhaps been under water for a while. I wound up doing a few wraps of muslin around the foam core to fill it out, used the factory tan vinyl from the back of a dead seat skin for the sides and cloth from Joanne Fabrics, once again, a perfect match and the arm rest works great!
Note that if you do not have a sewing machine, you can still use the outer cover of the old one as a template and a needle and thread (heavy thread). You just need to stitch the new cover back together inside out... same approach as with the sewing machine.
Hope that helps!
