Off topic - traffic lights 140-160

Going a bit off topic, but I have to ask. Is it only South Africa that has 4-way stops? I.e. at an intersection all 4 directions stop and you give way to oncoming traffic (for RHD it is wait for traffic on your right) and go if it is safe, similar to a roundabout. Here in NZ no one knows what it is and thinks it will cause so many accidents, but it does not. Also very useful when traffic lights are down, all directions flash orange or red and it becomes a 4-way stop. No need for traffic officers at broken lights unless it is a multi-lane intersection.

"Wikipedia" titbit: NZ is the only country in the world that still has the opposite give-way where cars waiting in the middle of the road can turn if oncoming traffic is also turning. The idea is to clear the middle of the road ASAP so tram tracks (which we don't have any more except I think Wellington or Christchurch) are not blocked.
