bosch electronic ignition in 142 problem 140-160

ok so I've got it started without the ballast resistor in. According to Patrick from Montreal the resistor should be between the starter and the +ve terminal from the coil (the side that comes straight from the ignition). I presently have a relay to the wire going to my #50 terminal of the starter. Do I still need to splice a resistor on that wire? The one I have is bosch # 0227 900 014 and has two prongs on one side and one on the other
