Head gasket failure in 960? 900

I have a 1996 960 wagon that I am pretty sure needs a head gasket. I am seeing milkshake on my oil stick. I have done a head gasket on a 240 and a Mercedes e320 I'd like to get your views on how difficult this job will be in deciding if I will tackle it.

The car only has 122k on it so I am pretty disappointed. I have heard that head gasket failures were not that common on the 960. It is running fine notwithstanding the milkshake oil.

Also is there a way that I can confirm that it is a Head gasket issue before I dive in?
What is the consensus on removing or not removing the engine? I would rather not but I read some one swear they would never do it again with the engine in the car.

Thanks very, very much.

Jim
