hot vs cold valve lash 700 1990

My engine was making some noise and has 177k miles on it, and never had a valve adjustment, so I decided to adjust the valves to hush it up a bit. Per the FAQ, someone mentioned measuring valve lash with the engine cold. Now at first, this would seem to make sense, because parts expand as they heat up, therefore providing a more accurate reading cold. I woke up, took measurements, all seemed to be within spec... .012 to .015. Didn't seem to need adjustment, but for kicks, I drove the car on a spirited foothills back road loop, and took measurements again, to test my observation. The valve lash went from min/max .012/.015 to .017/.020! I'll be adjusting my valves tonight, via shim kit/special tool (thanks Rene!).
mMasure valve lash hot, because after all, thats when valve lash matters most, unless you run liquid nitrogen through your car. ;)

anyone want to correct/argue/attest this fact? I'm fairly new to this brick business.
