87 240 stalling when put into gear 200

I have a 1987 Volvo 244 DL. When I first start it up and up it into either drive or reverse, it will stall out, but once restarted its fine. What can be the issues? I've read places that it might be a relay? I also have an issue with the dashlights not coming on. Anyone know the exact wiring that goes into the dashlights? Along with the dashlights not working, the temp gauge and fuel gauge are also out. Not sure if this is related or not.
