Replacing M40 gearbox oil seals 120-130

The subject: a 1970 122S which I've had since new but which I had "forgotten" about for 25 years, while it was gathering dust in my garage. That is, until about 3 years ago, when I managed to fire it up again (what joy!) and eventually get it back on the road.

One of the things I did was to replace the original felt oil seals on the engine (back and front) with new style (neoprene?) oil seals. This turned out to be highly successful - certainly no sign of oil leaks on the engine after that.

In my enthousiasm I then decided to replace the oil seals on the gearbox (M40) as well, even though I suppose it wasn't really necessary - a slight "wet-ness" perhaps, but no dripping. The result after having fitted new seals (from IPD): oil leaks on the gearbox, both front and rear. At least in the case of the rear end, the oil is visibly coming through the seal. I have pulled the flange off again but cannot see any obvious damage to the seal.

What have I done wrong?
