M46 backup lights don't use a switch on the shifter

Sigh. What about me brings out the hostility in you Art? This is the second time you have belittled a post of mine, the first when I was asking if there was an AC delete kit available for newer 240's like what is available for older 240's.

I have read many of your posts both here and on other sites and value your experience and opinions on Volvo's, but I don't appreciate this perceived assumption on your part that I am some hack just looking for a band-aid fix.

The "workaround" is not mine (as I stated in my original post), it was done by the previous owner (he also installed a console mounted toggle for the OD).

I never hinted at, inferred, or flat-out said I wanted to operate my back-up lights by some kind of shifter-mounted toggle or push-button. I am trying to re-wire the back up lights correctly.

As I said before, I do not own a Bentley, but I do own a Haynes manual, since it covers pre-1983 models. And the Haynes folks disagree with your assertion that the pre-1980 switch was for the OD, not the back-up lights. From Section 7A-5: "The back-up light switch is mounted near the top left rear corner of the transmission housing on most transmissions. The switch was temporarily relocated to the shift lever support on some late 70's vehicles to make it easier to service. However, the switch was vulnerable in this location during transmission removal and installation, so it was moved back to its original location." Has a little drawing of the switch carrier-mounted too.

Now what I failed to mention in my original post was that the previous owner told me he remembered the switch being mounted on the shifter, and with Haynes confirming such a thing DID exist, and since I do not expect to be replacing the transmission, It made sense to me to pursue that method of repair.

Maybe we can start over Art. If you are ever in Western Massachusetts look me up - coffee, beer, whatever, is on me.
