544 rear axel 444-544 1964

Had a 544 trailered home to Minnesota from sunny CA. Rear axel bearings grease dried out - need to replace outer bearings and seals, and while I'm at it the inners as well. Pinion seal is leaking - need to replace. Axel is a Spicer/Dana 4.1/1. So far I've got the brake back plate assembly off (driver side) and have gotten the pinion mate gear shaft and gears out of the differential. Don't see any c-clips.
Here's the question: I assume the axel is held in by the brake back plate. Is this correct? What's the next step to remove axel? Special puller?
