1991 clear coat failure_snow 200

The clear coat layer of paint on the hood and roof of my 1991 silver/grey 240 is flaking off, a little at a time, caused by snow/ice. Deck lid and all vertical panels are unaffected.

Is this a failure common to 1991 240 paint? Or the silver/grey?

This started 2 winters ago. Only occurs after 4-8 inches of snow sits on flat surfaces for a day or two. Almost glacial action. Roof is now 50%.

Same car sat out in 15 previous winters no problem. My silver '85 240 wagon and 122s sit next to it, no problem.

Yes, a heated garage probably would have prevented it. Full of old bikes and cars.

Any similar 86-93 240 paint clear coat failures? Remedies? insights?

Thanks
