Spring seat failure -- what typically happens? 200

Not to waste your time: MY Volvo didn't fail.

But I DO know that 240 spring seats do fail.

And my neighbor did ring my doorbell in the snow, and ask for help with his Taurus. Hard to see, but it finally became clear that a front spring broke, and extended far, although I am not sure if that was before or after the spring seat failed. (He applied some good power in forward and reverse -- hard to make the car move -- and the car made some new metallic noises. I would rather have gotten a good flashlight and had a look.)

I had forgotten that Paul Grimshaw suggests a handful of grease atop the 240's spring seat each fall. I MUST add that to the snow tire swap routine!

Do spring seats on the 240, when distressed, typically sag, or distort, or... fail catastrophically?

Thanks!
