1993 940 SW stuck out of overdrive 900 1993

I have a 1993 940 SW with about 180K miles. When I first bought the car the it was stuck out of overdrive. Occasionally when I pushed the overdrive button it would kick in and work until I slowed down and then it would move back out of overdrive and stay out. Since then the button hasn't worked at all and from time to time if I jumped on the interstate the car would shift on it's own into overdrive. The last several months overdrive has been non-existent.

Doing a little research I think my problem is in the relay, the solenoid or wiring. Figuring it out could be a spendy fix. I did find a Automatic Over-Drive Solenoid Bypass Kit online for a reasonable price and it seems like it could be an easy fix (link below). Is this a reasonable deduction? Could it be anything else? Is this a common problem in bricks of this era?

I appreciate any input and advice. Thanks.
