Fuel pump? (Long) 700 1989

Hi all,
My beautiful 89 740TI wagon (138K miles) seems to have a fuel issue. I have looked through the archives and FAQ's but could not find anything specific enough.
2 days ago I drove my 17 miles to the office to pick up meeting materials and head right back out. After 5 min max, the old girl fired up and stalled, then it would turn over and pop, but not run. I unplugged the AMM and it ran, OK no problem, i have a spare with me. Later in the day (cold engine) I swap out the AMM I have and everthing seems fine. the car runs normal until Friday when it is missing at all speeds and not very peppy. I have an appointment 25 miles north of town after hours and drive there, still missing some, but better than earlier. Finish he appointment, stop at the gas station to use their rest room and the car struggles to start and gets a mile down the rod and dies. I install my second backup AMM and nothing. It would not run with the AMM unhooked. After being towed home, I check it out this AM.
The FPR is clicking twice as I turn key, so it seems OK. It did run shortly today, 1 min and the in tank pump is humming (1/3 tank of fuel). The vacuum hose to the fuel regulator is dry, Nothing came out of the return line for the fuel rail when I turned it over, engine still slightly popping. I unhooked the fuel supply line and some fuel was pumping into my catch bottle, maybe 6 -8 ounces in 10-15 seconds of cranking. The fuel did look very pale- little color at all, but still smelled likegas. I filled up 130 miles before any of the issues started so i do not really expect it to be a fuel quality issue.
I don't think the radio Supression relay is an issue since it has been at least popping most of the time.
Does the main fuel pump fail in this way?
Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Palmer
