unhooked battery, re-connected, and now car runs rough! why?! 200 1993

'93 245 w/ 215k miles.

I had to take the red battery cable loose to clean it, got the radio code handy, ...so I cleaned the post, re-installed the cable, and now the car runs rough. When I drive the car, it seems to misfire and then it picks up and runs fine. From stops, it sputters and misfires, etc. and then finally "catches" and runs good.

What happened when I took the battery cable off to make the engine start doing this? I need to figure this out, because I can't drive the car like this in traffic (it might stall out and/or get me in a wreck).

It's weird. Thanks for your help.
