Clutch throwout arm question 200 1990

I'm resuming a clutch change on a 1990 240DL after a 4 year hiatus. The arm controlled by the clutch cable has a ball and socket fitting on the bell housing and a spring clip thing that goes into a slot on the arm. After fitting the spring around the ball and up through the slot the arm doesn't seem to be really restrained on the ball socket like before. Am I missing a step here?
