Compression test theory? 900 1994

Hi All
I am planning on doing a compression test on my 94 940 which is to be a recipient of a head I am rehabbing in order to confirm the condition of the rings and pistons/bores. But what I am wondering is, the testing will take place PRIOR to the installation of the new head, so to what degree will wear on the Valve stem/guide and or carbon build up on seats not allowing good contact effect the results(lower)? Still a worthwhile endeavor?
Matt
