Don't think this would be a problem in an M40/41 except in cases of extreme wear.
With the shifter cap loose the end of the lever can come out of the plate that controls
the 3 rods that have the shifter forks on them. You're sort of on your own until you
can get it back in the right place (easy if you know what gear you are in.)
