fuel pump short circuit 200 1990

So, I had a tow-home break-down today with my 1990 240 wagon. I found it was the main fuel pump by listening to it while the engine was cranking--the pump was silent.

I first thought of the fuel pump relay, and I replaced it without luck. Then, I removed the relay, and put a wire across the red wire and red/yellow wire terminals as per the instructions on 230-2 fig. 3 of the Robert Bentley service manual.

Well, not only did the pump stay silent, the wire got HOT. I then put my voltmeter negative prob in the red/yellow terminal, and the positive prob in the red terminal, and I got car voltage. So, somewhere, I have a short circuit, I think somewhere along the red/yellow wire.

I check the hole in the floor of the chassis under the back seat, and that wire is sound. Does anyone have any suggestions about where I should look for where this wire is grounding out? Thanks!
