I can't understand it. Blower motor dies, and then comes back to life 1 year later 200 1984

Something weird happened to me this morning. I was driving my special ladyfriend back home before work, and I was explaining how the heater in my 240 didn't work. It was about 15 degrees outside. I've been meaning to fix it since it died about a year ago, and especially since I moved to Idaho in November. But, I've really been dreading the whole process, so I've made due without.

I explained to her that when I turned the fan knob, nothing happened. When I turned the knob to show her, the fan kicked on and started blowing hot air. Bewilderment ensued.

Last year, I was driving home from Steven's Pass, and the heater abruptly crapped out. No more fan motor, and a burnt plastic smell came out of the vents for a short period of time. The motor hasn't worked since. Until this morning. Can anyone help me understand what is going on?
