Heater Control Valve - Vice Grips Hose Fix? 200 1992

Ongoing Problem: Constant stream of hot air through vents. Indie mechanic suggests one of two fixes. First: Replace heater control valve. Valve Part: $106.30. Labor: 1 hour at $89/hr. (Orlando). Fix Number Two: Open hood. Clamp needle-nose vice grips set at 1/4" onto heater hose to stop hot air from entering. Vice grips: $20. Good idea? Dumb? Thanks! (1992 240 wagon)
