This has been going on maybe 3-4 times in the past few weeks and only after it has been raining or foggy and damp. The car cranks and sounds great but just doesn't turn over. In dry weather it starts just fine and quickly, too. Searching brought up lots of good info but I want to make sure I check things in the correct order and hopefully it is something I can do myself.
- Fuel pump relay. Easy to check... when the car won't start I can try putting a jumper paperclip across the two fuses (4 and 6 I think) to make the fuel pump run without the relay then try starting the car. If it is not this should I replace it anyway assuming it is original?
- Change spark plug wires. I am sure they are old and an easy change so I should maybe replace them anyway.
- Replace distributer cap. Is this where the spark plug wires start from? I am not positive what this is but sounds very easy to replace. Pop off cap, check for dampness, put new one on.
- Replace distributer.
- Replace coil.
- Replace power stage. I'm not sure at all how to replace these last three or what they are.
Are there tests I can do or are all these just "replace them and see" items? Is this the correct order? Am I leaving anything out? Can I just buy these across the street at Advance Auto or should I buy Volvo parts from IPD?
Thanks! My wife just bought a new V50 so I will actually have time to do this stuff myself rather than rush it to a mechanic.
