Sounds to me like a blown intake manifold gasket. If you have a Bernzomatic torch, feed propane (unlit of course) to the intake runner at the cylinder head joint. If the idle immediately smooths out that's the problem. You've got compression and a know good, functioning injector. The fuel you smell in the exhaust is the lean misfire.
