15W-40 is perfectly fine. I used it for the first time in an OD box I rebuilt about 25 years ago. Still works, happy customer.
The steering box is any gear oil you can get in there, hypoid or otherwise. Any 80W-90 in other words. If it leaks, you can start pumping grease into it instead, just like was done in the old days.
