240 heater fan intermittant 200

Our 1989 240 with 140k miles... The heater fan did not turn on this morning until about 15 minutes after I started the car and had been driving it. Temps were in the mid 20s this morning with frost on the windshield. The wee bit of heat that gets through while driving was just enough to keep my windshield clear. I tried turning on the fan about 10 times while I drove and finally when I was about 1 mile from work I tried it and it turned on.

The fan always sounds good. No squeals or anything like I have heard in other 240s. I checked the fuse and it was fine. Has anyone else experienced an intermittant heater fan operation? Do I have a loose part under the dash or is the motor starting to die?
