Learning to drive is one thing, enjoying vintage cars is another. What's the goal? My first car was a 1966 122S, bought in 1974. I learned on early seventies cars. If my father had done what is suggested, he would have bought an early 30's car for me learn on! Like a Model A.
The goal is teaching to drive in the present, and new cars represent the present. Learn first on an automatic, then teach driving a standard. Logical progression.
I built a 1982 244GLT for my daughter ten years ago. Looking back that car was bit too old, but she loved it and I trusted her. My son has a 97 Honda Accord, and I never worry about him. It has air bags, dead nuts reliable, easy to drive. His dad likes vintage Volvos, he doesn't. And that's just fine.
