Brake Lights Don't Come On 140-160

All,
I have a 71 142S that has had persnickety problems with its brake lights. Changing the fuse has fixed the problem in the past. This time it did not.I checked the continuity at the fusebox, the three lamp sockets (previous owner had installed a 3rd brake light on the hat deck) and at the brake switch. All good.

Here's the mystery. The lights come on once -- the first time you step on the brakes -- and will not afterwards. The circuit seems fine, if the lights come on once, right? Does anyone have an idea what this could be?

Madhu
