Selling 1981 Bertone Coupe 200

Hello, from my own experience determining the asking price can be difficult given the specialty appeal of older Volvo's in general and I would think Bertones in particular. The internet can be a helpful resource to look for something similar to at least give a general indication of price point. You may find contact information for people who have similar vehicles (for example I noted one person had a Youtube ad for a Bertone last fall) and you might want to contact them to learn about their experience and what worked.

What someone will actually pay though of course depends on how a given individual values a particular car, at a particular point in time which ebbs and flows with the economy and time of year. I think there is quite a distinction too between those who will buy to drive vs. those who will buy to keep and perhaps drive very sparingly.

I recently purchased an '86 244 with very low mileage (not as low as yours though!) and the owner was at first holding quite firm last year to selling at a price near what the car had been appraised at (as part of settling an estate of a family member). In Canada, for registration purposes a vehicle that is 20 years old or older has to be appraised by a registered appraiser to determine the "value" for computing the sales tax due. Appraisers will appraise a vehicle just for sales tax purposes, but also for insurance replacement cost if required by the insurer, which may be quite different values. In my case, the owner's appraisal was about 2.5 times what I ultimately purchased the vehicle for, and the appraisal I had for tax purposes put the value at what I paid for it. The owner realized that the market could not justify a selling price at his earlier appraised value, and he had to ratchet the price down over several months. It might be helpful for you to contact a few classic/collectible car appraisers in your area and ask them what sources they would review to determine an appraisal of a vehicle such as yours. Based on their responses, you may want to have an appraisal done to help you - with the above caveats as to what someone may eventually pay.

I noted in your profile you are in Michigan, and you may have online services such as we have (www.autotrader.ca) where private sellers and dealers post ads for a fee. These services here tend to be used by people looking for specific makes and models, and buyers can search nationwide. I think in your case that Volvo classifieds on enthusiast websites would be a good starting place, as well as finding out about Volvo owners groups/clubs and opportunities to place a classified ad or small promotional ad in newsletters (electronic or otherwise).

As the other members have commented, you need to be careful with respect to accepting payment. It would be best to find someone in your area who you could meet personally, or who was willing to travel to see your Volvo and pay through an irrevocable method such as certified cheque/bank draft that could be verified while the person is with you.

I would be interested in contacting you further privately (see my profile for email) and if you post an email address in your profile I suspect others will as well.
