Hi guys,
Well after over a year with no problems I am back with yet another issue that has me stumped.
My daughter's 1986 240, with automatic transmission, suddenly only wants to go forward.
When she tries to move the shift lever, she says it just "glides" right past neutral and reverse. Even in park the car will continue to move forward unless she steps on the brake.
She is able to start and kill the car and her key will come out once the car has been shut off. Everything seems to work well except for the gearshift actually engaging in any given gear.
Could this be some sort of linkage problem?
About 2 months ago I had the exhaust worked on and have not driven the car over 15 to 20 miles since. I'm wondering if they might have unhooked something while working on the exhaust and forgot to hook it back up.
I did just speak to her again and she gave me the following additional information:
She once again said that the shifter will "glide" over neutral and reverse and will not engage when she moves it in to the park position. The shifter will however "click" into place when she moves the lever down to drive.
It seems as if the transmission is stuck in drive but again, that leads me to believe that the linkage is either out of adjustment or possibly unhooked. Of course I know next to nothing about it so I'm pretty much grasping at straws.
If you guys can give me any insight I would really appreciate it. I'm going to try to get the car to my shop sometime tomorrow and I'd like some ideas on what to look for.
Thanks in advance.
Dave
