Shifting M40 444-544

The friction disc can hang up on the input shaft due to rust and crud, and then begin moving again. It has to slide as the pressure plate releases. It's not uncommon. Any time a clutch is replaced the shaft has to be cleaned and the splines lubricated sparingly to prevent this.
Probably the clutch assembly is old, but if it doesn't stick again, and there are no other symptoms, keep driving it.
