Improving MPG...replacing AW 71 transmission with locking type AW70L 700 1986

I thought I was SOOO smart in replacing the OEM ZF Transmission with an Asian-Warner 71 that I rebuilt. It was from a turbo car and so I figured it was built extra tough. However it gives mediocre gas milage (17 in town) ...However, my son's 93 245 gives up to 31 on the highway at 65 mph. It has the AW70L model.
Now I have found a 90 740 in the Pick N Pull with the AW 70L locking type tranny that gives better gas mileage on the highway. It costs $178 if I pull it myself.
Is this a good trade off? It will not cost me a dime for labor to install it as I have a buddy who teaches Automotive Technology at the local community college.
Would the buying and installing of the AS70L tranny be worth it???
Thanks for any suggestions.
