Even a visual check is effective/legitimate when the wear is 50 per cent as yours is. Here's a perfect oppurtunity to cure your bordom--lots of choices to make---which grind is best for you--original lifters/pushrods or small block Chevy solids and custom tubular pushrods--orignal fiber gear or aftermarket metal (they used to be steel--now made of aluminum)--original felt seal or cover modified for a modern seal (see the BB poster who makes these).
Yes, your engine will run nearly normal while the lobe slowly--or not so slowly--grinds down--circulating all that metal around the motor. I can give you an annecdotal example---I drove a 142 till the bad lobe completely disappeared--taking up the slack in the rocker arm by adjusting the gap to near nothing over a period of a couple of months. The car had no trouble making the 70mph necessary for the Long Island Expressway untill there was no lift at all. As I wrote in my previous post--you'll have to do this job anyway--why not start benefitting now. -- Dave
