Spinning starter 200 1992

...or how I hope that it's not a damaged ring gear.

On the new to me '92 245, am finding an intermittent problem starting the car. Occasionally, will turn the key to start and find that the starter spins up rapidly, but not the engine with it. I'm hoping it's the starter solenoid rather than a damaged ring gear, but am posting up here to make sure that I'm on the right path.

Car cranks happily when starter engages, and the starter spins readily when the issue pops up. Any special testing tips to recommend, or something else I'm not thinking of?

Zach
