HELP!! Road trip...electrical grmlins!!! 700 1989

Driving Wfemobile (89 740 non-turbo) last night at 65MPH on a 450 mile road trip(one way,,,Texas is big!) when I noticed a flickering of the right side low-beam lights. Cruise control was on, also. Upon turning on high-beams, the engine shuts down, shift back to lows and engine runs again. Made it to destination at midnight without turning on high beams again.
The cutting out occurs even at idling, as long as I shift up to high beams, the engine turns right off. Low beams on, engine is OK.
Is it the switch itself, a relay, or a bad ground somewhere? I cleaned, sanded and used silicone grease on both grounds at the inner fenders last week.
Any help will be appreciated..I know I need to drive home in daylight!
Thanks,
el raidman
