Engine Rebuild 900 1996

Hi guys,

Few months ago I posted about a tapping sound in my engine, and even new valves, shims, hushers, etc would not quite the sound. Mine is a 1996 with the light pressure turbo (LPT).

I decided to take the motor apart, and what I found was beyond belief. Worn conrod bearings, two broken compression rings, and worn out cylinder bore. The car ran very well, with only the tapping sound in idle. I used to push it to 90-100mph with no problems.

The crankshaft was sent for resurfacing, and the block bored out to 0.030 oversize. I am using all Mahle parts for oversized conrod bearings and pistons with rings. I have also send all the internals, including the crank, for balancing.

The motor is in the midst of being assembled. What would be the best way to break into the motor for the rings to seat properly? I usually run below 3k rpms for the 1st 1k miles, with varying load, but never heavy load. I am thinking dino oil, until 1k miles before I go back to synthetics.

Anything different I can do to make the run in better?

Thanks guys.
