Intank Fuel Pump Connection Question 200 1993

The fuel sending unit connection on the top of the tank has rusted off. The wires leading to the tank have a black rubber plug on the end with a rusted something where it should connect to the top of the sending unit. Do I need to remove the rusted something from the black rubber before I can connect to the new sending unit?

I know this is a strangely worded question, but I am trying to visualise the plug/connection so I don't mess it up worse when I try to do the replacement.

Thanks,

Mark
