1984 244 Transmission Issue 200 1984

Hi Wes,

I read every sentence, waiting for the punch line. The line that would tell me which "bullet-proof" transmission you were talking about.

OK, I think the 4th gear comment tells me it is an M46.

Simply put, you disconnect the drive shaft, shifter, clutch cable, and wiring. Drop the starter, support the engine, support the transmission, disconnect the bell housing bolts, separate and lower the transmission and overdrive unit.

Then you take it apart and decide if you're fixing or swapping. No one knows if your tranny is shot.

This swapping of transmissions is probably what you need to do, but it isn't a level-2 DIY project unless you bring some commitment. You're better to start (as a self-described car repair n00b from the lost-brakes hit-a-tree thread) by checking another corner of the interwebz for a good opinion on whether you're up for this.
