Valve Hushers Replace or Leave Out? 200 1985

I have a 85 244ti with B21FT and it's time to check valve clearances ( have a couple tapping). My question is can you run without those crappy Hushers that don't seem to last very long?

I have had alot of older cars that didn't use them and with a good valve adjustment I never heard them tapping once the valve cover was put on.

Someone posted on the BB (I Think) that you don't need them so long as you shim them correctly. I just would like some feedback what you think or if you have done this.
Thanks,Charlie
