rear main seal replacement

The important thing to remember is to be sure not to do anything that damage the surface of the crankshaft.

Having said that I simply use a medium to large screwdriver as a pry tool to remove the rear main seals. You can pry against the back surface of the crankshaft. Simply insert the blade of the screwdriver past the rubber lip and far in against the seal edge. Once positioned like that simply pushing the handle towards the engine will pry the seal out nicely.
