starter to solenoid connection 200 1989

A no start condition got me all the way to the starter (which I removed).

The braided wire between the starter and the solenoid was hanging on by one thread. It is now an open circuit. It's most likely the culprit. Here is where I need advice. How can I bridge the gap (open) with a terminal (solenoid) on one end and a rusty braided wire from the starter? Can the braided wire be saved? Can I avoid a trip to the parts store? Has any one fixed this before?
