1986 744 Turbo M46 Shifting Problems 700 1986

I have a 1986 744 Turbo with the M46 transmission. Driving home from work one day, the transmission just stopped going into first and second gear. I made it home in the car in third and parked it. Recently I took the boot off to get down to the shifter linkage/ball socket, and removed the snap ring and upper ball socket bushing. If I pull the shifter out a little and mess with it enough, I think I can feel it go into second , but I still do think I have found first. The car still goes into reverse, third and fourth just fine. Any ideas? Could it possibly just be the shifter linkage / bushings? If so, is there anything I can do short of pulling the transmission out of the car?
