Can a 89 240 auto shifter be made to work in a 91 200 1991

The lockout is not working in my 91 240. Very much afraid that I will eventually end up in reverse cruising down the highway at 60. I wandering what modifications I will need to make. The car also starts in all gears and I can't for the life of me figure out if that yellow override tab is the problem. Unless its an easy fix, I would prefer to use the 89 240 shifter. It's a much simpler design, but I'm sure there are issues with the backup, positioning sensor and connectors etc. Which one should I use...
