checking front wheel bearings

just purchased an 84 244 turbo. there's some shake in the steering wheel on the freeway and during braking. when I jacked it up to check the ball joints you could really shake the wheel by holding at 3 and 6, and it didn't look like play coming from the joint or the tie rod. this makes me think it may be the wheel bearings. does play in the wheel bearings necessarily mean they are bad, or can they just be tightened?

Also, what size wrench will I need to properly tighten/torque the nut--is it a 24mm socket? Read a long post here about it but that was for an older 260 series.

while I'm down there...any tips on how to check the condition of the A-arm bushings?

thanks
