Steering u-joint difference 700

I just got into replacing the steering rack on my 1992 745 with one I got from the junk yard and have run into a problem. The replacement rack is supposedly from a 1987 and appears to be a ZF. (The ends of the rubber boots are large diameter and fit over rubber pucks on the inner tierods.) The rack I got is complete with the u-joint and I was planning to disconnect the existing rack at the top of the u-joint at the double-d shaft. However the u-joint on my existing rack is about 1" longer. Did different years have different u-joints? I know that when you buy a new or rebuilt rack, they come without the u-joint. Just taking rough measurements, it looks like I may be okay if I use my existing u-joint. Does that seem right?
