How to safely restrain steering wheel when removing 27mm nut holding wheel on steering column? 200 1979

Haynes says this nut is torqued to 44 ft-lbs so its on really tight. Is the steering wheel key lock strong enough to lock the steering column from rotating without damage (bending something?), or has the steering wheel got to be restrained from rotating by say a rope or some other way?
