Steering rack(s) 200 1986

I am confused as usual. My 86 240 needs inner tie rod ends, or maybe a new rack.
I am fairly certain the rack that is on the car came with it(ZF)> I have vertical axial motion in both tires but is it is markedly worse in the right as I ran over a small tree laying in the road and parts of it ended up wedged between the cross member and the rack shaft.
The link in the 940 FAQ'a for steering rack only lists one part number, sort of a One size fits all. I wrote them but have had no reply.
so what's the deal here? I am looking at about 275$ for a rebuilt rack. Some places say you can adapt one rack for another,I have yet to hear anyone say "this is what fits where and for when."
At what point are the inner tie rod ends connections so pooched that even I wouldn't use them?
I could go to the junk yard and spend the day tearing things apart, reinventing the wheel. Or I can ask the inhabitants here and ask the man who's been there, and save my self some grief.
So, I need replacement parts source and opinions concerning what to replace and when
Thanks as always.
Paul
