Getting the rear drums off?? 444-544 1958

I have a 58 pv444 that I'm trying to remove the rear brake drums off of. I have a solid brake drum puller and I put it on the one drum and began cranking. The drum never budged but the it did crack at the location of the two puller arms. So now I have a cracked drum (probably warped some now, too) but still haven't gotten it off. Is there some secret to getting these things off that I don't know? My manual just says remove the castle nut, which I did and then remove hub. They show a Volvo hub puller in the manual that bolts on to the lug bolts rather than using a drum puller, but I figured either should do the job. Any suggestions on getting this thing off. I guess this drum is toast now.
